You and the Jobs Bill
Congress has passed and the President has signed into law a bill that will save the jobs of thousands of teachers, firefighters, and public safety officers. The jobs bill is paid for by closing tax loopholes for companies such as AT&T. The loopholes created a subsidy for corporations that send our job overseas. We were paying companies to give our jobs away! The Congressional Budget Office estimates that eliminating this corporate give away will reduce the deficit by 1.4 billion dollars.
The effect of the jobs bill cannot easily be measured, but a few things are obvious. Many of you are sending your children back to school in classrooms that may not be as crowded as they might have been without this bill. Also, these teachers and firefighters will be able to keep their phone services. Our products and services are often the first to be let go when families face financial hardships. The result may save some of our jobs. And finally, we think it may force some companies to bring our jobs back to America.
The vote on the bill was pretty much along party lines. Democrats voted for the bill and the Republicans voted against it.
